I’m a grappler. I play judo. I train BJJ. I used to do jujitsu. I’ve never formally wrestled, but I have done wrestling classes and MMA. I don’t identify as a jujitsuka, judoka, or jiujitiero. I am a grappler. I started in 2007 and have more or less stuck with it since.

I am not a professional. I am not even an amateur. I am a recreationalist. I compete in local and regional tournaments for fun, health, and the love of the sport. I also referee judo tournaments in the Midwest as I’m able to.

  1. I tried viewing the link for the foam pattern to build my own judo floor but i get this error, The requested URL /4x8SpringLayout27springs.pdf was not found on this server. I was hoping that this document was still available. Thanks for any help you can provide.

    • It looks like the page that was hosting it is gone, and I couldn’t find anywhere else. The gist of it is that it’s 27 blocks per 4×8 piece of OSB. The layout is 9 rows of 3 evenly spaced on the board, with rows being offset from each other. There’s still pictures of the original Denver Judo layout before it was reduced from 33 per board to 27 per board here: http://judoinfo.com/tatami/

If the lattice pattern is too much, you could make a slightly stiffer floor as I did using 8 rows of 4 blocks – then the spacing is much easier to figure out on the 4×8 board, but the edges sag a bit and it’s a little stiff that you may want to move the blocks for the edges of the mat out a bit or add in extra blocks on the corners of the mat.
